Genetic Improvement
RESEARCH – INTRODUCTION
We believe that ACMC applied research is in the forefront of developments in our field.
Our
genetics and research, with an outstanding team of scientists, is equipped with the advanced technology necessary to translate leading edge techniques to success on farm.
GENETICS
ACMC has large breeding populations providing a wealth of phenotypic data from our UK and International programmes. This data coming from our extensive testing
programme
is constantly managed and monitored by our specifically and specially designed "Gene Evaluation
Programme" (GEP) that incorporates BLUP.
ACMC also has an extensive biological data bank providing the key material for molecular selection as it becomes available.
PIG RESEARCH
Pig research at ACMC
represents
a controlled blend of genetics and husbandry. Monitoring protocols, recording and testing by trained personnel are an integral part of ACMC. We have in-house expertise in experimental design, management, and statistical analysis.
All of our research activities are geared towards the single aim of maximising our pigs' potential return for ourselves and our customers. ACMC research covers all aspects of housing and equipment design, feeding regimes and practical husbandry techniques in female and boar reproduction and growing pig performance through to meat quantity and quality evaluation.
Our genetic research covers commercial breed evaluation, evaluation of genetic markers and estimation of genetic parameters. We have a long record of successful collaboration with academic institutions and commercial companies.
