Matthew’s marathon raises nearly £5,000 for charity
Almost £5,000 has been raised by Matthew Curtis who completed his first Flora London Marathon run in a highly-creditable 4 hours 9 minutes 29 seconds, coming within the top 25 per cent of runners.
The money will be donated to the charity, Macmillan Cancer Support.
Matthew, managing director of international pig-breeding company ACMC, based at Beeford, Yorkshire; said: “I am very grateful to all those who have supported me in this run, for such a worthwhile cause,”
Although a regular runner who has completed triathlons and half-marathons, he had never run a full marathon before. The 26.2 mile course, which is flat and fast, passes such landmarks as Cutty Sark, the famous tea clipper, Tower Bridge and Britain’s tallest building in Canary Wharf.
This year’s run was generally reckoned to be one of the most gruelling in recent years, with a record temperature of 22ºC.
“The hardest part was the last sector of the race from about 23 miles, but the crowds were brilliant at keeping you going,” said Matthew, who admitted being “pretty sore” the next day!
The 2007 Flora London Marathon was the biggest ever in the 27-year history of the event, with a record 36,396 people starting the event.
