Many cases of lameness in pigs are seen where the principal cause is mechanical — such as a twisting injury — yet often these pigs are treated only with antibiotics, says Paul Thompson, veterinary consultant to pig-breeding company ACMC.
There are a now a number of good anti-inflammatory drugs licensed for pigs. While it can be difficult on farms to decide whether a swelling on a pig’s leg is the result of an injury or infection, anti-inflammatory agents act to reduce the swelling and speed recovery times.
He advises producers to discuss the use of anti-inflammatories during their vet’s next visit. But he points out that if a broken leg is suspected, then the pig should be euthanased immediately on welfare grounds.
