Matthew completes second marathon
Matthew Curtis has completed the Flora London Marathon in an official time 4 hours 15 seconds and has raised over £3,000 for the charity, Macmillan Cancer Support.
Although a regular runner, this is only the second marathon for Matthew, who is managing director of Yorkshire-based international pig breeding company, ACMC Ltd.
Despite having other commitments, he trained hard when possible, putting in around 35 miles a week since last October.
He believes the cooler conditions — compared with last year’s sweltering 22 deg C — helped him almost to crack the four-hour mark and enabling him to finish in the top third of the 34,420 people who completed the 26-mile course. The number of pig breeders who completed the course was not documented!
“The last six miles are a real killer, but you get boosted by the crowd over the final three,” said Matthew. While he was pleased to have beaten his last year’s time of 4 hours 10 minutes, he is disappointed not to have cracked the ‘four-hour’ barrier’ by just 15 seconds — but he hasn’t ruled out competing again!
Most of the donations came from Matthew’s contacts within the pig industry. “Considering the difficulties pig farmers and others within the industry are facing at the moment, I think their generosity is outstanding,” he commented. “I am grateful for their support for such a worthwhile cause”.
