Texel Sheep
The ACMC flock of Beeford Texels has been established from both UK and Dutch flocks. Since its inception, it has been developed genetically through careful selection procedure; combining conformation with speed of growth and carcase quality. Conformation selection complies with those standards laid down by the British Texel Sheep Society.
As a fully registered member, the Beeford flock is able to supply pedigree animals. Physical performance such as prolificacy, mothering ability, growth and carcase quality are recorded through the Texel Sire Reference Scheme (TRS). This scheme provides both internal and external flock comparisons enabling replacement breeding stock to be selected on their genetic merits. The TRS uses the on-farm compiled data along with ultra-sound muscle and fat scanning data to identify the superior animals for future breeding. This data is analysed using sophisticated, computerised, Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) techniques to provide cross-flock comparisons, thus giving the Beeford flock inter-flock ranking.
The benefits of the most genetically advanced ram lambs produced by scheme members (of which over 10,000 are tested annually) are made available to all though the use of artificial insemination. The Beeford flock uses sires that have had major successes at national level.
Health of the Beeford Texels is of paramount importance. The flock is a member of the DEFRA* Scrapie Monitoring Scheme and is certified through their MV/CAE Accreditation Programme as being Maedi Visna free. Regular flock health inspections are carried out by independent veterinary surgeons to ensure that the highest health standards are maintained.

Beeford Lambmaker has an Index Score within the top 5% of all Performance Recorded Stock Sires.
This Ram also has the highest EBV for Muscle Depth in 2006 of 6.21 out of all Stock Rams Performance Recorded Texels, 2006.
Choosing animals with high muscle depth EBVs will increase lamb muscularity and hence the lean meat content of the carcase.
